Tonsils are small, oval-shaped masses of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the throat. They play a role in the immune system by helping to fight off infections, especially in children. There are three types of tonsils: palatine tonsils, pharyngeal tonsils, and lingual tonsils. When the body detects germs, the tonsils produce antibodies to help protect against illness.
Sometimes, tonsils can become swollen or infected, a condition known as tonsillitis. Symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever. In severe cases, doctors may recommend a tonsillectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils.
