tombstones of Ahlat
The tombstones of Ahlat are a collection of ancient gravestones located in Ahlat, Turkey, near the shores of Lake Van. These tombstones, known as seljuk tombstones, date back to the 11th and 12th centuries and are characterized by their intricate carvings and unique designs. They serve as important historical markers of the Seljuk Empire and reflect the artistic and cultural heritage of the region.
The site contains over 8,000 tombstones, making it one of the largest cemeteries in the world. Many of these stones feature motifs such as geometric patterns, floral designs, and inscriptions in Arabic and Persian. The tombstones of Ahlat are recognized as a significant cultural heritage site and were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013.
