The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the two joints that connect the jawbone to the skull, allowing for movement necessary for activities like chewing and speaking. Each joint is located on either side of the head, just in front of the ears. These joints work in coordination with muscles and ligaments to enable smooth jaw movement.
TMJ disorders can occur when there are issues with the joints or surrounding muscles, leading to pain, discomfort, or difficulty in jaw movement. Symptoms may include jaw pain, clicking sounds, or headaches. Treatment options often involve physical therapy, medication, or dental interventions to alleviate symptoms and restore function.
