sternothyroid
The sternothyroid is a muscle located in the neck, specifically part of the infrahyoid muscles. It plays a crucial role in the movement of the larynx and helps in swallowing by depressing the thyroid cartilage. This muscle is positioned beneath the sternohyoid and is involved in stabilizing the hyoid bone.
Originating from the manubrium of the sternum, the sternothyroid inserts into the thyroid cartilage of the larynx. It is innervated by the ansa cervicalis, a loop of nerves that also supplies other infrahyoid muscles. Proper functioning of the sternothyroid is essential for effective speech and breathing.
