stapedectomy
Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at improving hearing in individuals with a specific type of hearing loss called otosclerosis. This condition occurs when the stapes, one of the tiny bones in the middle ear, becomes immobilized due to abnormal bone growth, preventing sound vibrations from being transmitted effectively to the inner ear.
During a stapedectomy, the surgeon removes the affected stapes bone and replaces it with a small prosthetic device. This allows sound waves to pass through more freely, often resulting in improved hearing. The procedure is typically performed under local or general anesthesia and has a high success rate.
