solenodons
Solenodons are small, nocturnal mammals native to the Caribbean, particularly found in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. They belong to the family Solenodontidae and are known for their elongated snouts and large, sharp incisors. These unique creatures resemble shrews and have a distinctive, long, hairless tail.
Solenodons are notable for their venomous saliva, which they deliver through grooves in their lower incisors. They primarily feed on insects, worms, and small invertebrates. Despite their ancient lineage, dating back to the Paleocene era, solenodons are currently considered endangered due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species.
