Solenodontidae
The family Solenodontidae includes small, nocturnal mammals known as solenodons. These unique creatures are native to the Caribbean, particularly found in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Solenodons have elongated snouts, large eyes, and a long, hairless tail. They are notable for their venomous saliva, which they use to subdue prey such as insects and small vertebrates.
Solenodons are considered living fossils, as they have existed for millions of years with little evolutionary change. They belong to the order Eulipotyphla, which also includes shrews and moles. Due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, solenodons are currently classified as endangered.
