scala tympani
The scala tympani is one of the three fluid-filled chambers in the cochlea of the inner ear. It is located below the scala vestibuli and is filled with a fluid called perilymph. This chamber plays a crucial role in the process of hearing by transmitting sound vibrations from the oval window to the round window, allowing for the conversion of sound waves into neural signals.
In the cochlea, the scala tympani works alongside the scala vestibuli and the scala media. Together, these chambers help facilitate the movement of sound waves through the cochlea, ultimately leading to the stimulation of hair cells in the organ of Corti, which are essential for hearing.
