scab (Labor)
A "scab" in labor terms refers to a worker who continues to work or takes the place of union workers during a strike. This term is often used negatively by unions, as scabs undermine the collective bargaining power of striking workers. By crossing picket lines, scabs can weaken the effectiveness of a strike and prolong labor disputes.
The use of scabs can lead to tension between workers and management, as well as among workers themselves. Unions, such as the AFL-CIO, typically discourage the hiring of scabs and may organize efforts to support striking workers, emphasizing solidarity and collective action.
