promyelocytic leukemia (PML)
Promyelocytic leukemia (PML) is a type of acute myeloid leukemia characterized by the accumulation of abnormal white blood cells called promyelocytes. This condition disrupts normal blood cell production, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, frequent infections, and easy bruising or bleeding. PML is often associated with a specific genetic mutation involving the promyelocytic leukemia gene and the retinoic acid receptor alpha gene.
Treatment for PML typically includes a combination of chemotherapy and targeted therapy, such as all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). ATRA helps to promote the differentiation of the abnormal cells into more mature, functional blood cells. With appropriate treatment, many patients can achieve remission and improve their quality of life.
