A penalty kick is a method of restarting play in soccer after a foul has occurred inside the penalty area. It is awarded to the attacking team, allowing one player to take a shot at the goal from a designated spot, 12 yards away from the goal line. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to defend the goal during this attempt.
The player taking the penalty kick must wait for the referee's signal before starting their run-up. If successful, the kick results in a goal, adding one point to the attacking team's score. If missed, the game continues without any change in score.
