oil wrestling
Oil wrestling is a traditional sport primarily associated with Turkey, where competitors wrestle while covered in olive oil. This practice dates back centuries and is often featured in festivals, particularly the annual Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival, which is one of the oldest sports events in the world.
The wrestlers, known as pehlivans, wear leather shorts called kispet and aim to pin their opponent to the ground. The oil makes it challenging to grip, adding a unique twist to the sport. Matches can last for several minutes, and the winner is determined by skill, strength, and technique.
