noblesse de robe
The term "noblesse de robe" refers to a social class in France during the Ancien Régime, composed of individuals who gained nobility through holding judicial or administrative positions rather than through birth. This class emerged in the 16th century and included magistrates, lawyers, and other officials who were often wealthy and influential.
Unlike the traditional nobility, known as "noblesse d'épée," who derived their status from military service, the noblesse de robe was associated with the legal and bureaucratic systems. Their rise reflected the increasing importance of the judicial system and administration in French society, particularly as the monarchy sought to centralize power.
