The musk deer is a small, herbivorous mammal found primarily in the mountainous regions of Asia, including parts of Himalayas and Siberia. Unlike true deer, musk deer lack antlers and have elongated canine teeth, which can resemble tusks. They are known for their distinctive musk gland, located near the base of the abdomen, which produces a strong-smelling substance used in mating rituals and territorial marking. Musk deer are typically solitary animals, preferring to live in dense forests and steep terrains. They have a unique ability to navigate their rugged habitats, using their strong hind legs to leap between rocky outcrops. Due to habitat loss and poaching for their musk, many species of musk deer are considered endangered.
