muriqui
The muriqui, also known as the woolly spider monkey, is a large primate native to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. It belongs to the family Atelidae and is known for its long limbs and prehensile tail, which it uses to navigate the treetops. Muriquis are social animals, living in groups that can include both males and females, and they primarily feed on fruits, leaves, and flowers.
There are two species of muriqui: the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) and the southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides). Both species are considered endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their remaining populations and preserve their natural habitat in the Atlantic Forest.
