motor neuron disease
Motor neuron disease (MND) is a group of neurological disorders that affect the motor neurons, which are the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements. This condition leads to muscle weakness, stiffness, and eventually paralysis as the motor neurons degenerate and die. Common types of MND include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS).
The exact cause of MND is not fully understood, but it can be influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms often begin with muscle twitching and cramping, progressing to difficulties in speaking, swallowing, and breathing. There is currently no cure for MND, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
