Insulin secretion is the process by which the pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. When we eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. In response, specialized cells in the pancreas called beta cells detect the rise in glucose and release insulin to help cells absorb the sugar for energy or storage. Insulin plays a crucial role in maintaining balance in the body. If insulin secretion is insufficient, it can lead to high blood sugar levels, a condition known as hyperglycemia. Conversely, excessive insulin can cause low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, both of which can have serious health implications.
