iconostasis
An iconostasis is a decorative screen found in many Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. It separates the altar area from the nave, where the congregation sits. The iconostasis is typically adorned with religious icons, which are images of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints, serving as a visual representation of the spiritual world.
The structure of the iconostasis usually includes three main sections: the central door, known as the Royal Doors, flanked by two smaller doors called the Deacon Doors. This arrangement emphasizes the sacredness of the altar, where the Eucharist is celebrated, and helps guide the worshippers' focus during the liturgy.
