greenschist facies
Greenschist facies is a specific set of metamorphic conditions characterized by moderate temperature and pressure, typically ranging from 300 to 500 degrees Celsius and 3 to 10 kilobars. This facies is commonly associated with the alteration of basalt and other mafic rocks, resulting in the formation of minerals such as chlorite, biotite, and albite.
The name "greenschist" comes from the green color of the minerals that dominate this facies. Rocks formed under these conditions often exhibit a schistose texture, which means they have a layered or foliated appearance. Greenschist facies is commonly found in regions of tectonic activity, such as subduction zones and orogenic belts.
