gotra
Gotra refers to a lineage or clan system in Hindu society, primarily used to identify the ancestral lineage of individuals. It is traditionally associated with the Brahmin community but is also found among other castes. Each gotra is linked to a specific sage or rishi, and individuals belonging to the same gotra are considered to be descendants of that sage.
In marriage, gotra plays a significant role, as individuals from the same gotra are generally prohibited from marrying each other to avoid inbreeding. This practice helps maintain genetic diversity and strengthens social ties within different clans.
