fundoplication
Fundoplication is a surgical procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). During the surgery, the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. This helps prevent stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, reducing symptoms like heartburn.
The procedure can be performed using traditional open surgery or minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy. Patients may experience relief from GERD symptoms and a better quality of life after recovery. However, like all surgeries, fundoplication carries some risks and potential complications.
