floating ribs
Floating ribs are the last two pairs of ribs in the human rib cage, specifically the eleventh and twelfth ribs. Unlike other ribs, they do not attach to the sternum or to the cartilage of other ribs, making them unique. Instead, they are only connected to the spine at the back, providing some protection to the kidneys and other internal organs.
These ribs are called "floating" because they are not anchored in the front, allowing for greater flexibility and movement of the torso. This anatomical feature is important for activities that require bending and twisting, contributing to the overall mobility of the thoracic spine.
