flexor digitorum profundus
The flexor digitorum profundus is a muscle located in the forearm. It is responsible for bending the fingers at the distal joints, allowing for gripping and grasping movements. This muscle originates from the upper part of the ulna bone and the interosseous membrane, and it extends down to the fingers.
This muscle is innervated by two nerves: the median nerve and the ulnar nerve. The flexor digitorum profundus is unique because it has tendons that split to allow the tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis to pass through, enabling coordinated finger movements.
