farrowing
Farrowing is the process in which a female pig, known as a sow, gives birth to a litter of piglets. This typically occurs after a gestation period of about 114 days. During farrowing, the sow will seek a comfortable and safe environment to deliver her young, often in a specially designed area called a farrowing crate.
The average litter size can range from 6 to 12 piglets, although larger litters are not uncommon. After birth, the piglets will nurse from their mother, receiving essential nutrients from her milk. Proper care during this time is crucial for the health and survival of both the sow and her piglets.
