epiphyses
Epiphyses are the rounded ends of long bones, such as those found in the arms and legs. They are covered with a smooth layer of cartilage, which helps reduce friction in joints and allows for smooth movement. The epiphyses play a crucial role in bone growth and development, especially during childhood and adolescence.
In growing bones, the epiphyses are separated from the main bone shaft by a growth plate, known as the epiphyseal plate. This plate is where new bone tissue is formed, allowing the bone to lengthen. Once growth is complete, the epiphyseal plate hardens and becomes the epiphyseal line.
