Growth Plate
A growth plate, also known as an epiphyseal plate, is a layer of cartilage located at the ends of long bones in children and adolescents. This area is crucial for bone growth, allowing bones to lengthen as a person grows. Once a person reaches adulthood, the growth plates harden and turn into solid bone, marking the end of height increase.
Growth plates are responsible for the development of height and are influenced by various factors, including hormones and nutrition. Injuries to growth plates can affect bone development and may lead to growth discrepancies if not properly treated.
