Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a virus that primarily affects the respiratory system. It is part of the enterovirus family, which includes other viruses like polio and coxsackievirus. EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness, particularly in children and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. The virus is transmitted through respiratory secretions, such as saliva, mucus, or droplets from coughs and sneezes. Outbreaks of EV-D68 often occur in late summer and early fall. While most cases are mild, some can lead to serious complications, including acute flaccid myelitis, a rare neurological condition.
