e-passport
An e-passport, or electronic passport, is a travel document that contains an embedded microchip. This chip securely stores the holder's personal information, including their name, date of birth, and biometric data like fingerprints or facial recognition. The e-passport is designed to enhance security and streamline the process of verifying a traveler’s identity at border control.
When a traveler presents an e-passport, it can be scanned by automated systems, allowing for quicker processing at airports and other entry points. Many countries, including those in the European Union and United States, have adopted e-passports to improve travel efficiency and reduce the risk of fraud.
