dilation and curettage (D&C)
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a medical procedure used to remove tissue from the inside of the uterus. It involves two main steps: dilation, where the cervix is gently opened, and curettage, where a special instrument called a curette is used to scrape the uterine lining. This procedure can be performed for various reasons, including diagnosing uterine conditions, treating abnormal bleeding, or clearing the uterus after a miscarriage.
D&C is typically done in a hospital or clinic setting and may require anesthesia. Recovery time is usually short, with most patients able to return to normal activities within a few days. Potential risks include infection, heavy bleeding, or injury to the uterus, but serious complications are rare.
