dichlorodifluoromethane
Dichlorodifluoromethane, commonly known as CFC-12, is a colorless gas that was widely used as a refrigerant and propellant in aerosol sprays. It belongs to a group of chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, which were popular for their effectiveness in cooling systems and as solvents.
However, due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer, the production and use of dichlorodifluoromethane have been largely phased out under the Montreal Protocol. This international treaty aims to protect the ozone layer by reducing substances that deplete it, leading to a significant decrease in the use of CFCs.
