Homonym: decay (Rot)
Decay refers to the process by which organic matter breaks down over time. This natural process occurs when living organisms die, and their bodies are decomposed by bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. As these organisms feed on the dead material, they recycle nutrients back into the environment, contributing to soil health.
In addition to biological decay, the term can also apply to physical processes, such as the decay of radioactive materials. In this context, radioactive isotopes lose energy and particles over time, transforming into different elements. This type of decay is measured in half-lives, which indicate the time it takes for half of the original substance to decay.
