chiru
The chiru, also known as the Tibetan antelope, is a species native to the high plateaus of the Tibetan Plateau in China. It is known for its slender body, long legs, and distinctive light brown fur with white markings. Chirus are well-adapted to their harsh environment, thriving at altitudes of over 4,000 meters.
Chirus are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses and shrubs. They are also famous for their soft undercoat, called shahtoosh, which is highly valued in the textile industry. Unfortunately, this has led to significant poaching, putting the chiru population at risk and prompting conservation efforts to protect this unique species.
