central canal
The central canal is a narrow channel located in the spinal cord, which is part of the central nervous system. It runs the length of the spinal cord and is filled with cerebrospinal fluid, providing cushioning and nutrients to the surrounding tissues. This fluid also helps remove waste products from the spinal cord.
In addition to its protective role, the central canal plays a part in the overall function of the nervous system. It is connected to the ventricles of the brain, which are larger cavities that also contain cerebrospinal fluid, ensuring a continuous flow throughout the brain and spinal cord.
