camerlengo
A camerlengo is a high-ranking official in the Roman Catholic Church, specifically responsible for managing the finances and administration of the Vatican during a papal vacancy. This role becomes particularly important when a pope dies or resigns, as the camerlengo oversees the transition period until a new pope is elected.
The camerlengo is also tasked with ensuring the proper conduct of the Church's affairs and safeguarding the papal properties. Traditionally, the camerlengo is a cardinal, and his duties include calling the conclave, the assembly of cardinals that elects the new pope.
