black-faced cormorant
The black-faced cormorant is a large waterbird found primarily along the coasts of southern Australia and New Zealand. It is easily identifiable by its dark plumage and distinctive white facial markings. These birds are excellent divers, using their strong bodies to catch fish and other aquatic prey.
Typically, black-faced cormorants prefer coastal habitats, such as rocky shorelines and estuaries. They often nest in colonies on cliffs or trees, where they build their nests from twigs and seaweed. Their population is stable, and they play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control fish populations.
