black powder
Black powder, also known as gunpowder, is a chemical mixture primarily composed of three components: potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur. It has been used historically as a propellant in firearms, cannons, and fireworks. When ignited, black powder rapidly produces gas and heat, resulting in an explosive reaction.
This substance was first developed in China during the 9th century and played a significant role in warfare and mining. Although modern explosives have largely replaced black powder, it is still used in some applications, such as historical reenactments and certain types of firearms, particularly in muzzleloading.
