battlements
Battlements are defensive architectural features commonly found on the tops of castles and fortifications. They consist of a series of raised sections, called merlons, and lower sections, known as embrasures. These structures allowed defenders to shield themselves while providing openings to shoot arrows or firearms at attackers.
Typically made of stone or brick, battlements were designed to enhance the security of a fortress. They are often associated with the medieval period, particularly in Europe, where they played a crucial role in the defense strategies of knights and lords during conflicts.
