assassination of Julius Caesar
The assassination of Julius Caesar occurred on March 15, 44 BCE, a date known as the Ides of March. Caesar, a Roman general and statesman, had gained significant power, which alarmed many senators. A group of about 60 conspirators, including notable figures like Brutus and Cassius, plotted to kill him to prevent what they saw as a threat to the Roman Republic.
On that day, Caesar was attacked during a Senate meeting at the Theatre of Pompey. He was stabbed 23 times by the conspirators. His death led to a power struggle and ultimately contributed to the end of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.
