areola
The areola is the circular, pigmented area surrounding the nipple on the breast. It varies in size, color, and texture among individuals and can change during different life stages, such as puberty, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. The areola contains small glands called Montgomery glands, which secrete a lubricating fluid to protect the nipple during breastfeeding.
In addition to its role in breastfeeding, the areola is sensitive to touch and temperature, contributing to sexual arousal. It is an important part of the anatomy of both female and male breasts, although it is more prominent in females due to hormonal changes.
