ancien régime
The term "ancien régime" refers to the political and social system that existed in France before the French Revolution of 1789. This system was characterized by absolute monarchy, feudal privileges, and a rigid class structure, where society was divided into three estates: the clergy, the nobility, and the common people. The king held significant power, and the nobility enjoyed various privileges, while the common people faced heavy taxation and limited rights.
The ancien régime was marked by economic difficulties and social unrest, which ultimately contributed to the revolution. Key events, such as the Estates-General of 1789 and the subsequent formation of the National Assembly, challenged the existing order and led to the rise of new political ideas, including democracy and equality.
