amplitude modulation (AM)
Amplitude modulation (AM) is a technique used in electronic communication, most commonly for transmitting radio signals. In AM, the strength (or amplitude) of a carrier wave is varied in proportion to the audio signal being sent, such as music or voice. This allows the information to be encoded onto the carrier wave for transmission.
When the AM signal is received, a radio receiver demodulates the signal, extracting the original audio information from the varying amplitude. AM is widely used in AM radio broadcasting, where it allows for long-distance transmission, although it is more susceptible to noise and interference compared to other modulation methods like frequency modulation (FM).
