Zombie Ant Fungus
The Zombie Ant Fungus, scientifically known as Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, is a parasitic fungus that infects ants, particularly the Carpenter Ant. Once an ant is infected, the fungus manipulates its behavior, causing the ant to leave its colony and climb vegetation.
After climbing, the ant bites down on a leaf or twig, securing itself in place. The fungus then kills the ant and grows a stalk from its head, releasing spores to infect more ants. This unique life cycle showcases the complex interactions between parasites and their hosts in nature.
