Carpenter Ant
The Carpenter Ant is a large species of ant known for its ability to excavate wood to create nests. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood but remove it to form galleries for their colonies. These ants are typically black or bicolored and can range from 1/4 to 1 inch in length.
Carpenter ants are commonly found in forests and urban areas, often nesting in decaying or damp wood. They play a role in the ecosystem by helping to break down dead trees. Their presence can indicate moisture problems in buildings, as they prefer wood that is soft and damaged.
