Zapatista Movement
The Zapatista Movement is a revolutionary social and political movement that emerged in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas in 1994. It is named after Emiliano Zapata, a key figure in the Mexican Revolution, and is primarily led by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). The movement advocates for indigenous rights, land reform, and social justice, emphasizing the importance of local governance and autonomy.
The Zapatistas gained international attention after their armed uprising on January 1, 1994, coinciding with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). They utilize a combination of grassroots organizing, direct action, and digital communication to promote their cause. The movement has inspired various social movements worldwide, highlighting issues of inequality and indigenous rights.
