Zanzibar Revolution
The Zanzibar Revolution occurred on January 12, 1964, in the Zanzibar Archipelago, part of present-day Tanzania. It was a violent uprising led by the Afro-Shirazi Party against the ruling Sultan and the Arab-dominated government. The revolution aimed to address social inequalities and political disenfranchisement faced by the African majority.
Following the revolution, the Sultan fled, and a new government was established, marking the end of centuries of Arab rule in Zanzibar. The aftermath saw significant changes in the political landscape, leading to the eventual union of Zanzibar with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania in April 1964.
