Yirrkala people
The Yirrkala people are an Indigenous Australian group from the northeastern part of the Northern Territory. They are part of the Gumatj clan and speak the Djambatj language, among others. The Yirrkala community is known for its rich cultural heritage, including traditional art, music, and dance.
Yirrkala is also notable for its significant role in the land rights movement. In 1963, the Yirrkala people sent the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to the Australian Parliament, seeking recognition of their land rights. This event marked a pivotal moment in Indigenous activism and highlighted the importance of land to the Yirrkala community.
