Wuchereria
Wuchereria is a genus of parasitic roundworms, specifically known for causing lymphatic filariasis in humans. These worms are transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, primarily belonging to the Culex and Aedes species. Once inside the human body, they can live in the lymphatic system, leading to severe swelling and discomfort.
The most notable species within this genus is Wuchereria bancrofti, which is responsible for the majority of lymphatic filariasis cases worldwide. This disease can result in significant health issues, including elephantiasis, a condition characterized by extreme swelling of the limbs and genitals. Prevention focuses on controlling mosquito populations and using protective measures.
