Women Airforce Service Pilots
The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) were a group of female pilots who served during World War II. Established in 1943, they were tasked with flying military aircraft to free up male pilots for combat. The program trained over 1,000 women, who flew various missions, including ferrying planes and towing targets for training exercises.
WASP pilots faced significant challenges, including a lack of military status and recognition. Despite their contributions, they were not granted veteran status until decades later. The program was disbanded in 1944, but the legacy of the WASP continues to inspire women in aviation today.
