Wiyot
The Wiyot are a Native American tribe located in northern California, primarily around the Humboldt Bay area. They are known for their rich cultural heritage, which includes traditional practices such as basket weaving, fishing, and hunting. The Wiyot language, part of the Algic language family, is an important aspect of their identity and cultural preservation.
Historically, the Wiyot faced significant challenges due to colonization and land dispossession. In 1860, a tragic event known as the Wiyot Massacre resulted in the deaths of many tribe members. Today, the Wiyot Tribe works to revitalize their culture and language while advocating for the protection of their ancestral lands.
