Willowbrook
Willowbrook was a state school for individuals with intellectual disabilities located in New York. Established in 1947, it aimed to provide care and education for children and adults with various disabilities. Over the years, it became known for overcrowding and inadequate living conditions, leading to significant public concern.
In the 1970s, investigative reports revealed the poor treatment of residents, prompting reforms in the care of individuals with disabilities. Willowbrook eventually closed in 1987, and its legacy contributed to changes in policies and practices regarding the treatment of people with disabilities across the United States.
